ORGANISATIONAL PROFILE

The Berea Scouts Association is a division of the national body called Lesotho Scouts Association which is situated in the capital city, Maseru.  It is affiliated to the regional and global body called the world organisation of the Scout Movement (W.O.S.M.).

 

Scouting is a movement of young people whose aim and purpose is to promote the development of young people in achieving their full physical, intellectual, social and spiritual potentials as individuals, as responsible citizens, and as members of their local, national and international communities.

 

 

Method of achieving the aim:

This is achieved by providing an enjoyable and attractive scheme of progressive training based on the scout promise and law and guided by adult leadership.

 

The Promise:

“On my honour, I promise that I will do my best to do my duty to God, to the king and my country, to help other people at all times and to obey the scout laws.”

 

The Laws:

  1. A scout is to be trusted
  2. A scout is loyal
  3. A scout is friendly and considerate
  4. A scout belongs t the world-wide family of scouts
  5. A scout has courage in all difficulties
  6. A scout makes good use of time and is careful of possessions and property
  7. A scout has self-respect and respect for others

 

The scout movement is a non-governmental organisation; it is non-political, open to all without distinction of origin, race, or creed.

Mission Statement:

The organisation’s mission statement is to contribute to the education of young people through a value system based on the scout promise and law, to help build a better world where people are self-fulfilled as individuals and play a constructive role in society.  This is achieved by:

  • Involving them throughout their formative years in a non-formal education process
  • Using a specific method that makes each individual the principal agent in his/her development as a self-reliant, supportive, responsible and committed person
  • Assisting them to establish a value system based upon spiritual, social and personal principles as expressed in the promise and law.

 

Lesotho Scouts Association Berea is Situated in Berea District approximately 56km from Maseru towards the east.  Our history can be traced back before the national independence as part of Lesotho Scout Association.  Our office is in Mapoteng (Likoting).  We have a board commonly known as the district executive committee which is elected annually.  It is comprised of eight members being:

    1. Chairperson (District Commissioner)
    2. Vice Chair
    3. Secretary General
    4. Vice Secretary
    5. Treasurer
    6. Projects Manager (Project Commissioner)
    7. Two members

All these people together with the other members are volunteers.

Goals and Achievements

So far we have achieved the following:

 

  • From 1960s to the present we attended many development forums and activities both international and local.
  • From 1996 - 1997 we planted 200,000 trees within Berea District with the Ministry of Agriculture.
  • From 1999 - 2000 we have held workshops and made policies to protect children from abuse and rape with police and women and law in Southern Africa Research Education Trust
  • From 2000 – 2003 we have held workshops and made policies to prevent HIV/AIDS with Policy Project through the U.S. Embassy
  • As part of our aim is to develop young people intellectually, we have produced teachers, nurses, lawyers, engineers, police and soldiers and now we have 100 (+/-) candidates who are studying at tertiary level.
  • From 2002 we have built a youth training center with the assistance of Canada Fund.  This center allows youth to hold seminars and training.

 

Major Objectives in the New Millennium

  1. To promote self-help activities at community level
  2. To foster self-reliance
  3. To promote and enhance participatory development methodologies
  4. To enhance capacity-building and empowerment through training programs
  5. To ensure that the Association is responsive to the needs of the target groups
  6. To create awareness that sustainable development comes through full participation in the design and implementation of development activities.
